Before the book, the conference circuit.
Twelve conference talks in three years, for utilities, wind energy, wildlife biologists, and the GIS community, including the Esri User Conference, plus a run of Collector for ArcGIS workshops taught with Esri. The subject was the platform shift he was leading at the time: field crews moving from Windows Mobile GPS units to tablets, mobile GIS, and high‑accuracy Bluetooth receivers. Different decade, same job.

AI Won’t Take Your Job, But Someone Using AI Will
How to be that person.
The people pulling ahead right now are rarely the most technical in the room. They are the ones who treat AI as a daily working partner and build the habits that compound. This keynote gives students, job seekers, and working professionals a clear picture of what AI actually changes about work, what it does not, and the skills that make someone hard to replace.
Matt has led this kind of transition before, and he is leading the next one now. Starting in 2008 he moved surveyors and field crews off Windows Mobile GPS units and onto modern mobile GIS, founded the equipment dealership Anatum GeoMobile Solutions in 2014, and today is bringing those same crews onto handheld LiDAR scanners that turn job sites into Gaussian splats and digital twins. He documents it firsthand on the widely read AGS blog. Between 2015 and 2017 he took that first shift to a dozen conference stages, from the Esri User Conference to the American Wind Energy Association. The pattern repeats: the tools change, and the people who embrace them become the ones everyone else calls.

Why he can hold a room
A teacher before he was a speaker.
Matt’s own education started at a community college, with an A.S. in biology from the College of the Sequoias. He went on to a B.S. in ecology and an M.S. in evolutionary biology at San Diego State, where he taught ornithology, general biology, and human anatomy, and volunteered four years as a field guide for the ornithology course, leading weekly birding trips across San Diego County. The biology department named him its Outstanding Teaching Assistant in 2004.
After graduate school he taught general biology and labs as adjunct faculty at three Southern California community colleges: Moreno Valley, Miramar, and Southwestern. So when Moreno Valley College booked him to keynote its 2026 career summit, it was a return to a campus where he once taught. The teaching carried into the industry years too: in 2017 he taught Collector for ArcGIS workshops with Esri in Sacramento, Fresno, Tulare, and Reno, the same year he presented at the Esri User Conference. And the biology never fully left: his geospatial company, Anatum, is named for Falco peregrinus anatum, the American peregrine falcon. The habits are the same on any stage: clear explanations, real questions welcomed, and no talking down to the room.
